Church History

United Community Baptist Mission was started Tuesday evening, April 27th, 1971 in the home of Brother Wilbur and Evangelist Lula Smith, 2228 Mermaid Avenue, Coney Island, New York under the leadership of the Reverend Connie Mobley.  In attendance were twenty (20) adults and their children.   A unanimous decision was made to start a community church to include everyone and work for the Kingdom of God.  Through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Mrs. Ernestine Powell birthed the name, “United Community Baptist Church”.  Just like the disciples on the Day of Pentecost, the congregation was on one accord, in one place and having the same mind praised God for a new ministry and mission for the community of Coney Island. Our mission was incorporated May 11th, 1971 as a Baptist Church.  Immediately following the incorporation, the late Reverend W. D. Gardner, Pastor of the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, New York City, installed Reverend Connie Mobley as the Pastor of the United Community Baptist Church and bonafided the church.  We continued to grow spiritually, our membership increased and financially we prospered.

Sunday, July 4th, 1971 we had the grand march from the Gravesend Community Center into our church home located at 2512 Mermaid Avenue with approximately 80 members.  At the 7am service the late Reverend Starling Mills, Pastor of the Zion Shiloh Baptist Church delivered the first sermon; Pastor Connie Mobley preached at 11am & 3:30pm, Reverend T.J. Boyd and the Salem Missionary Baptist Church was our guest.

After we purchased this site, the city acquired our building and relocated us to 2225 Mermaid Avenue.  We worshipped in this location for several years before purchasing our present home site of 2701 Mermaid Avenue.  The Lord blessed us to march into this edifice Sunday, February 4th, 1979 at 7am.  The late Reverend D.W. Batts, Pastor of the Greater Freegift Baptist Church preached and dedicated the building. In July 1983 our building was paid for.  On Sunday, February 5th, 1984 the late Reverend D.W. Batts and the Greater Freegift Baptist Church family conducted the mortgage burning service.  Sunday February 5th, 1996 the Reverend H. Devore Chapman, Pastor of the Greater Bright Light Baptist Church, conducted the unveiling of the cornerstone service.

Since being established, the Lord has blessed us to be affiliated with numerous ecumenical bodies including: the Eastern Baptist Association, The Empire State Convention, The National Baptist Convention USA Inc., The New York Missionary Baptist Association, The Progressive National Baptist Convention and The Brooklyn Council of Churches.

The ministry focus and vision of Pastor Connie Mobley has been “Put God First”.  With over three decades of dedicated service and leadership the Lord blessed him to license, consecrate and ordain many ministers, evangelists, deacons and deaconesses.  He is proud to have one daughter and three biological sons who are all pastoring in the borough of Brooklyn, New York: The late Reverend Bernice Russell Ladson, Pastor of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Bath Beach; The Reverend Lemuel Malachi Mobley, Pastor of the Living Stone Baptist Church and Bishop Robert Haywood Mobley, Pastor of the Restoration Pentecostal House of Prayer both in Bedford-Stuyvesant; and The Reverend Connis Maurice Mobley, Pastor of the United Community Baptist Church.

Ministries internally and externally that have enriched the lives of many include the following:

  • Wednesday Noon Day Prayer Service
  • Prison Ministry at Rikers Island and other area facilities
  • Year-round Feeding Programs
  • Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets
  • Nursing Home Visitation
  • A Clothing Distribution Program
  • The Annual Vacation Bible School
  • Educational Scholarships
  • Ministers Wives/Widows Recognition

Due to health challenges, the Reverend Connis M. Mobley was called in October 1997 to assist his father with the work of ministry here at United Community.  He consented to come as the Co-Pastor to have full authority to govern the work of ministry with the same-shared duties as the Pastor.  Shortly thereafter, the Reverend Connie Mobley received the title of honor “Father Mobley” and the Reverend Larnie Mae Mobley received the title of honor “Shepherd-Mother Mobley”, both being the spiritual parents (organizers) that gave birth to this ministry.

Pastor Connis Mobley in fulfilling his vision of “Pastor + People = Progress for the Kingdom of God” in 1998 initiated a major renovation project entitled, “Project 2000 & Beyond”.  Presently, it is a continuous project, which is solely supported by the financial contributions of the families and friends of United Community.  Much work has been accomplished expanding upon the original foundation set forth by the Organizers.  With the help of the Holy Spirit the following has been achieved:

·        Structured Ministries Development (Handbooks, Ministry Descriptions . . .)

In December 2002, Father Mobley was retired as the Pastor.  On Sunday, April 6, 2003 on the climax of the Thirty-Second Year of Christian Ministry, the late Reverend Joe L. Parker, Pastor of the Wayside Baptist Church installed the Reverend Connis Mobley as the Pastor of the United Community Baptist Church.

Since that time until the present, the Lord has continued to expand the work of ministry measurable and immeasurable.  The Lord is still blessing United Community Baptist Church.  He has given our Pastor the Vision, the Mission and the Motto to continue on preaching, teaching, delivering and setting free, to all who believe.  Souls are still being added as well as ministries, associations and concerns of the community of Coney Island under the leadership of our Pastor.
