The Old Testament
Job 14:1-14 (NIV)
"Man born of woman is of few days and full of trouble.
He springs up like a flower and withers away; like a fleeting shadow, he does not endure.
Do you fix your eye on such a one? Will you bring him before you for judgment?
Who can bring what is pure from the impure? No one!
Man's days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed.
So look away from him and let him alone, till he has put in his time like a hired man.
"At least there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail.
Its roots may grow old in the ground and its stump die in the soil,
Yet at the scent of water it will bud and put forth shoots like a plant.
But man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last and is no more.
As water disappears from the sea or a riverbed becomes parched and dry,
So man lies down and does not rise; till the heavens are no more, men will not awake or be roused from their sleep.
"If only you would hide me in the grave and conceal me till your anger has passed! If only you would set me a time and then remember me!
If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait for my renewal to come.
The New Testament Gospel
St. John 11: 22-26 NIV
But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask."
Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."
Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;
And whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
The New Testament Epistle
I Thessalonians 4:14-18
We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
Therefore encourage each other with these words.
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.” Psalm 18:2 |
The Songs of Assurance
All Hail the Power
All hail the power of Jesus name, Let angels prostrate fall;
Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown Him Lord of all! Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown Him Lord of all.
Oh, that with yonder sacred throng, We at His feet may fall,
Join in the everlasting song, And crown Him Lord of all!
Join in the everlasting song, And crown Him Lord of all.
He’s Sweet I Know
He’s sweet, I know, He’s sweet, I know;
Dark clouds may rise and strong winds may blow.
I’ll tell the world wherever I go,
I have found a Savior, He’s sweet, I know.
Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now I’m found, was blind, but now I see.
Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.
What a Friend We Have in Jesus
What a Friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege is to carry everything to God in prayer.
Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged, Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Father Connie Mobley
The Reverend Connie Mobley received the title of distinction and elevation “Father” 1998.
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” II Timothy 4:7-8
Father Connie Mobley was born on August 12, 1923 in Dooley County, Vienna, Georgia to the late Robert and Minnie Mobley. At an early age he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior and was baptized at the St. Mark’s Baptist Church, Vienna, Georgia. There he remained faithful to the church where he was taught to pray and sing meter hymns by the deacons. He was involved with the Sunday School and loved the people of God.
He attended Vienna Industrial School in Vienna, Georgia and from the 11th Grade he was drafted into the Army of the United States of America. On November 28, 1942 he was sent to Rhineland, Central Europe as a soldier (Technician Fifth Grade) to fight for our country in World War II. During this tour he went to France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, and the Philippine Islands. Upon his honorable discharge on January 29, 1946 he received decorations and citations in the following areas: European African Middle Eastern Service Metal with 2 Bronze Stars; American Service Medal; Asiatic Pacific Service Metal; Good Conduct Medal; and World War II Victory Medal in Fort McPherson, Georgia.
He returned home to his mother and brother for a short while before migrating to New York City in 1947. Upon arriving in New York City he continued his education by attending Drake Institute. He never forgot the church covenant which reads, “When we remove from this place, we engage as soon as possible to unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word.” Therefore, he joined the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend Dr. William D. Gardner. In 1948, he was ordained as a deacon and served faithfully and diligently developing a servant’s heart that loved God and his people. It was during this time that the Lord carved “His Call” in Father Mobley’s heart and an incredible Preaching/Prayer Warrior was born.
On November 29, 1959 he was ordained and elected to serve as the Assistant Pastor of the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church all under the leadership of the late Reverend Dr. William D. Gardner. To further his enlightenment for ministry he attended the Manhattan Bible Institute in New York City. In addition he continued to attend many other conferences, seminars and conventions over the life span of his ministry.
He met Larnie Mae Moore in June 1957. After dating for awhile, he proposed to his bride in January, 1961. On Sunday, September 24, 1961 he married Larnie Mae Moore of Bonnerton, North Carolina at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church – New York City, New York. The late Dr. W.D. Gardner and the late Dr. T.H. McKenzie Sr., officiated. From that union four children were born: Robert Haywood, Connis Maurice, Lemuel Malachi, and Minnie Nacole.
While serving as Assistant Pastor he gave assistance at Zion Shiloh Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York to the late Reverend John H. Lawton, Sr. from 1958 to 1968. There he helped to strengthen the work of ministry by covering the pastor during his illness and unavailability; stepping into the role of teaching, training, preaching and leading the Body of Christ.
In the early 1960’s he became a member of the Brooklyn Baptist Evangelical Union; The Baptist Minister’s Conference of Greater New York and Vicinity and The Baptist Minister’s Evening Conference of Greater New York and Vicinity.
As his ministry gift of preaching and noted as a “praying preacher” in New York City and the Tri-State area echoed through the faith community, The First Baptist Church of Coney Island heard and called him. Therefore, in 1968 he was called to Pastor, The First Baptist Church of Coney Island, which at that time was the oldest and the only Baptist Church in the area.
He quickly became noticed and recognized as a “no-nonsense”, outspoken, stand alone rebel for the faith community. Never afraid of church folks, government officials, police, gangs and the like; he always said how he felt when things were not being done to correct the ills and wrongs, injustices and neglect against families and the community-at-large of Coney Island. So, for the short time he spent at that church, the Lord blessed and enlarged his territory with an increase in membership; placing a new roof on the building; purchased a new organ; removed the theatre seats and replaced with pews and many other renovations to the building.
Upon leaving The First Baptist Church of Coney Island in April, 1971, The United Community Baptist Mission was started Tuesday, April 27, 1971 at 8:00PM in the home of Bro. and Sis. Wilbur Smith, 2228 Mermaid Avenue, Coney Island, New York, with twenty (20) persons present. That evening began with a soul stirring devotion. It was then decided to start a community church where everyone would be welcome to come in and work out their soul salvation. Everyone was on one accord, having the same mind to follow the leading of God through Father Mobley. This Mission was incorporated May 11, 1971 as a Baptist Church. Sunday, July 4, 1971 at 7:00AM, Father Connie & Mother Larnie Mobley led the Grand March into 2512 Mermaid Avenue with approximately 75 to 80 Members.
The late Reverend Starling Mills delivered the sermon at 7:00AM; at 11:00AM Father Mobley preached and at 3:30PM, Reverend T.J. Boyd and The Salem Missionary Baptist Church was our guest.
After the church purchased this site the city required this location and relocated the church at 2225 Mermaid Avenue. After being there a couple of years the opportunity to purchase 2701 Mermaid Avenue came August 1978.
The Lord blessed Father Connie & Mother Mobley to lead the march into this edifice Sunday, February 4, 1979. At 7:00AM.and at 4:00PM the late Reverend D.W. Batts preached and dedicated the building. Father Mobley was insistent on paying off the building and in July 1983 the building was paid for. On Sunday, February 5, 1984 the late Reverend D.W. Batts and the Greater Freegift Baptist Church family conducted the mortgage burning service. Sunday, February 5, 1996 the Reverend H. Devore Chapman and the Greater Bright Light Baptist Church family conducted the unveiling of the cornerstone service.
Since being established, the Lord has blessed us to be affiliated with numerous ecumenical bodies including: The Eastern Baptist Association, The Empire State Convention, The National Baptist Convention USA, Inc., The New York Missionary Baptist Association, The Progressive National Baptist Convention, and the Brooklyn Council of Churches, and The Coney Island Ministers Alliance United.
The ministry focus and vision of Father Connie Mobley has been PUT GOD FIRST. With over three decades of dedicated service and leadership the Lord blessed him to license, consecrate and ordain many ministers, evangelists, deacons and deaconesses. He is blessed to have three biological sons in ministry who shall continue to live out his teaching and preaching taught to them.
The ministries internally and externally that have enriched the lives of many include the following: Wednesday Noon Day Prayer Service; Prison Ministry at Riker’s Island and other area facilities; Year-round Feeding Programs; Thanksgiving & Christmas Baskets; Nursing Home Visitations; Clothing Distribution Program; the Annual Vacation Bible School; Educational Scholarship Program; and he had a deep concern and love for Ministers Widows thereby establishing a day for Ministers Wives/Widows Recognition Service.
Since United Community Baptist Church has been organized, it is now the oldest Baptist church in Coney Island and Father Mobley was the proud Organizer & Pastor, who loved this community and his church family for 40 Years. He loved helping and assisting young ministers, giving unlimited opportunities to all ages to exercise their ministry gifts. He has helped countless families, single parents, children, and the elderly with money, food, clothing, counseling, housing, education, marriages and funerals.
During his pastorate until his retirement, he worked as a tractor-trailer driver, a school bus driver (Brighton School Bus Company), and was blessed to become an entrepreneur in owning his own bus company that served many churches and organizations with motor coach and school buses.
In the year of 1992, Father Mobley began to experience some health challenges to which he was diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Being a strong man of integrity and self-worth, he began to prepare his family and church family for the days to come when he may become incapacitated. For the next three years he traveled periodically to Atlanta, Georgia with his sons to discover his family’s history. He desperately wanted his children to know the roots of the “Mobley’s” so that they may have the privilege of knowing his family.
It was discovered that the “Mobley” name was a “free name” for black slaves who desired to be free created in the mid 1800’s. Family names such as the Bishops, Spears and Smith have legally changed their names when convicted of crimes so that they would not serve time.
Those persons who were convicted of horrendous crimes, if able to change their names before a hanging or some other form of execution, had to move out of the state, swear by oath not to contact any family or friends, dismiss their former life and lifestyle completely, and for the most part they were shipped over 300 miles from their homeland never to return again. If by chance that they committed a crime with the name “Mobley”, discovering that their original name had been changed – they were immediately released to prisoners who would mercilessly beat them to death. Now the family fully understands why he was desirous to know his roots and heritage. What a sound historical revelation that the Mobley’s come from a strong constitution and hold a family name of great honor. It was later discovered as well that his father was a twin.
“A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” Proverbs 22:1
What a Life! What a Legacy! Father Mobley loved God his Father, he loved life, he loved his wife whom he always called “Honey”; he loved his children dearly and he ecstatically loved his grandchildren, and he loved people.
The congregation of United Community Baptist Church loved Father Mobley so much. The older set of members who knew him, and never left him, before his illness and watched his decline in health deserve to be honorably mentioned.
